Rejuvenate Your Body: Misconceptions about detoxing (plus tips and products to rejuvenate your body)!

Toxins, teas, laxatives, cleanses using lemon juice and cayenne pepper — a quick Google search of the word “detox” and you’ll be bombarded with advice (some more sound than others). As a registered dietitian, I often hear clients say they’re seeking weight loss and my guidance on the latest detox products. The good news? Your body is able to naturally detox itself!

How? Our bodies utilize the nutrients found in our diet to detoxify daily. Toxins are created through our regular metabolism or are introduced when we are consuming food or drink, breathing, or are absorbed through the skin. Toxins can range from lactic acid, urea and waste products to pesticides, air pollution or alcohol, to name a few.

Our ability to detoxify varies from person to person and is influenced by diet, lifestyle, genetic factors and our environment. Some of us may need more detox support than others, but overall the three tips below can help support your body in becoming the most efficient detoxifying machine and provide a boost in fiber, helping support and maintain bowel regularity.

3 Dietitian Tips to Refresh and Rejuvenate Your Body with Natural Detoxification Support:

  1. Stay hydrated. We all know water is important, but here is where consistency is key.
  2. Consume 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Increasing produce in your diet will also provide a boost in fiber, helping support and maintain bowel regularity.
    • My dietitian picks: cruciferous veggies (ie: broccoli and Brussels sprouts), berries, artichokes, garlic and onion.
  3. Feed your gut right. Include probiotic-rich foods that are naturally fermented to increase the diversity of good bacteria.

Whatever you decide, be informed before jumping on the latest detox diet or juice cleanse fad. Many non-credentialed people claim to be experts; however, there is not enough research at this time to support its validity. Plus, detox programs can vary widely and may pose a risk for some people (such as people with health problems, those with eating disorders, those who take multiple medications, and pregnant or breastfeeding women).
